Karakoram Highway Blocked by Heavy Landslides, Internet Disruption Hits Gilgit-Baltistan
Gilgit – July 24, 2025:
Continuous heavy rainfall in Gilgit-Baltistan and surrounding regions has triggered multiple landslides, blocking the Karakoram Highway (KKH) at several key points. As a result, road connectivity has been completely severed in parts of Diamer, Chilas, and Nagar, while internet services have also been disrupted, leaving residents and tourists stranded and cut off from communication.
Affected Areas
The landslides were reported near:
-
Tatta Pani (Diamer)
-
Thalichi
-
Samar Nala
-
Pasu and Gojal (Upper Hunza)
Officials from the National Highway Authority (NHA) and Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority (GBDMA) have confirmed that clearing operations are underway, but weather conditions continue to hamper rescue efforts.
Internet Services Down
Alongside road blockages, fiber optic cables buried along the KKH have been damaged, causing widespread internet outages in Hunza, Skardu, Gilgit, and adjacent regions.
Telecom providers including PTCL and Special Communications Organization (SCO) have acknowledged the disruption and are working on emergency restoration.
NDMA & Army Support on Standby
According to NDMA (National Disaster Management Authority) officials, C-130 aircraft and helicopters may be deployed to airlift stranded tourists and deliver emergency supplies if access is not restored within 24 hours.
“We are coordinating with the Army and Air Force to ensure timely evacuation if needed,” — NDMA Spokesperson
